COMMUNITY BULLETIN: SPRING 2019
For Students, Parents/Guardians, Alumni & Friends

Message from the Head of School
This year, Woodside experienced a "changing of the guard." Ariel Edwards completed six years as Head of School, and fifteen years overall of dedicated service to the entire school community. Her enthusiasm and hard work were greatly appreciated, and she will be missed.

I want to express my appreciation to our students, parents, guardians, alumni, and friends for your warm welcome to Woodside. I come to you from Laurel School, where I was Director of Innovation and Middle School Teacher for many years. I am enjoying getting to know the Woodside family, especially the opportunity to work with our high school students. I have been impressed by the delightful enthusiasm of our students, the vibrant dedication of our teachers and staff, and the caring attention of our parents and guardians.

I am mindful that it is always challenging to experience a change of Administration, and grateful for your trust and also your questions and comments. This is how we will be able to move forward together on behalf of our students. I encourage you to stay in touch with me at (415) 564-1063 or
jwalsh@wissf.org. I look forward to getting to know you all. -- Joanne Walsh, Head of School

Stepping Forward with STEM
We are excited to expand our STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program for next academic year, offering AP calculus, AP physics, computer science, and STEM challenges every semester. As a school that serves both local and international English Learners, all students will benefit from a STEM approach, making gains not only within each academic discipline but also developing and practicing problem solving, collaborative and critical thinking skills.
Spotlight on Community Service
This spring marked the continuation of a cherished Woodside tradition, the
annual All-School Earth Day Field Trip. Once again we returned to Sigmund Stern Grove to volunteer in service to planet earth by planting, pulling up non-native plants, weeding, and spreading mulch. The coordinator from the SF Recreation and Parks Department complimented our students and faculty, and commented that he looks forward to our visit every year, because our students are such a reliable crew.
President's Volunteer Service Award: Gold
Congratulations to Class of 2020 student Avin Ketih who has been awarded the nation's premier voluntarism honor in recognition and appreciation for outstanding efforts to strengthen our nation and communities through volunteer service. Avin has volunteered over 600 hours as a summer camp counselor during high school. Well done!
